1986 ROCKIN’ ALL OVER THE WORLD TOUR
1985 had been an artistically great year for John. He had released Centerfield, his first album in ten years (in which, as usually, he played all the instruments and vocal parts himself), and it had become a big succes, reaching the top of the charts, while its leading single The Old Man Down The Road became a Top10 hit single and the baseball themed title song became an instant classic. His first comeback was a fact.
In 1986, John released Eye Of The Zombie (this time playing with a full band) and decided to support it with a tour, his first since Creedence had disbanded fourteen years before in 1972. Still, even though his career seemed to be back on track, this wasn’t a happy period for John. He was feuding with both his old label, Fantasy Records (which even sued him for sounding too much like himself on The Old Man Down The Road!) and his old band, including his brother Tom. Because of this, John kept refusing to perform any of his old hits, and instead proposed a show that consisted mostly of songs from Centerfield and Eye Of The Zombie. Even though people in the audience were screaming for the old hits at every concert, it would be another year before John would let go of the bad feelings and started playing his classic hits again (apparently it was Bob Dylan who instigated him to do so during an impromptu jam session), and it would take John another eleven years to go on tour again.
The Rockin’ All Over The World Tour of 1986 consisted of 47 concerts in three legs, and despite its name was basically a USA tour (one concert was played just over the border in Vancouver). The concerts followed a quite tight scheme, with very little variation in the setlist: Mr. Greed opened the set and Rockin’ All Over The World closed it. In general, John played about 6 songs from Centerfield and 8 from Eye Of The Zombie, plus a couple of singles, B-sides and covers for a total of 18-21 songs a night. The tour started at the end of August in Memphis, and ended in December in Los Angeles. After that, except for a handful of performances and guest appearances, it would be another ten and a half years before John went on tour again.

L.A. Times review – August 27, 1986
N.Y. Times review – August 30, 1986 |
Note: many websites containing lists of Fogerty’s concerts, report a concert being played in Memphis on the 26th. This however seems to be incorrect. During my research for this page, I have never found any mention of a concert on that date, but I have found a number of newspaper articles and even a short TV interview with John from August/September 1986 that mention only one concert in Memphis, said to have happened ‘on Wednesday’, and being his first concert in 14 years. As that week’s Wednesday was indeed the 27th, and there is nowhere any mention of two concerts being played, I suspect the 26th date is the result of some wrongly dated bootleg recording (the setlists I have seen for this ‘ghost’ concert are exactly the same as the one for the 27th, even though this doesn’t necessarily mean anything, as there was very little setlist variation during the 1986 tour). If anybody has any proof of a concert being played on the 26th, please let me know! |
